Phish - 12/31/1991 Worcester Memorial Auditorium, Worcester, MA

“I treat every minute like an hour and then it seems like a year has just flashed by again. Twenty years later, I’m still upside down.”

December 31, 1991 was Phish’s third New Year’s Eve gig and their largest show at that time with a stated capacity of 4,000. It took place in the ornate Art Deco “New Aud”, built in the 1930’s seemingly for just such a purpose with an open floor sans chairs and a wrap-around balcony. Tickets to the band’s first 3-set NYE celebration were $16.50 and the show was sold out with fans traveling great distances to celebrate the end of another great year of Phish. This was the band’s only stand-alone New Year’s Eve show and the only three-set NYE show where the new year fell during set II.

The band had recently signed with Elektra and had been working with engineers Kevin Halpin and Jon Altschiller on their third album, A Picture Of Nectar. Jon was also a taper and self-proclaimed Phish freak. He taped the show to two separate sources (both DAT) - audience with mics at the FOH position and a soundboard patch from Paul Languedoc. Two decades later, Jon, now the full-time livephish.com remote engineer, combined the tracks to create the matrix master for the New Aud release. Mastered by Fred Kevorkian, this unique source is a proper document of a classic show, combining the qualities of both recordings and harnessing the stunning music and electricity that characterized this special performance.

The three-set New Year’s Eve show became a hallmark of Phish’s years to come - a ritual that has occurred nearly every year the band has been active. The New Aud celebrates more than three hours of Prime Phish and is a perfect 20th anniversary view inside this formative show. “It’s a small world, but we all start out small.”

Phish – Hampton / Winston-Salem ’97

Phish dip into the “Holy Grail” of legendary shows to release Hampton/Winston-Salem ‘97. Among some of the most requested shows for release from the Phish Archives. The 7-CD box set, features three complete shows recorded Live November 21 & 22, 1997 Hampton Coliseum, Hampton, VA and November 23, 1997 Lawrence Joel Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum, Winston-Salem, NC, in the midst of Phish’s legendary 1997 Fall Tour. Hampton/Winston-Salem ‘97 contains all the music played over these three shows for a total of 45 songs (8 hours of music from Paul Languedoc’s stereo soundboard mix, remastered by Fred Kevorkian).

The 1997 Hampton Coliseum shows were the band’s first two-night stand at Hampton Coliseum – a venue they have played a total of fifteen times including a two-night stand in 1998 (released as Hampton Comes Alive) and a trio of reunion shows in 2009. The shape and feel of the venue have earned it the nickname “The Mothership” among fans. The next show after Hampton 1997 took place at Lawrence Joel Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, North Carolina - another familiar venue where Phish also performed in 1994, 1995 and 1998.

According to Phish Archivist, Kevin Shapiro: “The Hampton/Winston-Salem 97 shows were packed with notable renditions of classics including “Split Open And Melt”, “AC/DC Bag”, “Slave To The Traffic Light”, “Mike’s Song”, “Halley’s Comet”, “Tweezer”, “Run Like An Antelope”, “Stash” and “Bathtub Gin”. The band also showcased a wide variety of newer covers from the debut of the Rolling Stones’ “Emotional Rescue” to Del McCoury’s “Beauty Of My Dreams”, Jimi Hendrix’s “Izabella”, Clifton Chenier’s “My Soul” and even an impromptu take on War’s “Low Rider”. The Hampton/Winston-Salem ‘97 shows also showcased newer originals like “Dogs Stole Things”, “Ghost”, “Piper” and the brand-new-for-fall instrumental “Black-Eyed Katy”, which is the only song repeated on the release.More than what was played, the sheer heights of these performances are what made them special and built their acclaim.” - ohkeepahblog

Jerry Jams For Rex Compilation

August 9, 2010 marks the 15 year anniversary of legendary musician and Grateful Dead co-founder Jerry Garcia’s death. As a way to honor his musical and community legacy, the gifted musicians on this compilation have generously contributed stirring live performances of Jerry Garcia songs to benefit the Rex Foundation. Available August 10 in a variety of formats (see below), Jerry Jams for Rex was brought to life by Brad Serling of nugs.net and includes four exclusive previously unreleased live Garcia songs from Phish, Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers, The String Cheese Incident, and Keller & The Keels. Other artists featured on the album include The Black Crowes, Yonder Mountain String Band and more. All proceeds are a contribution to the Rex Foundation.

Furthering what Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead started, the Rex Foundation was born in 1983 as a way to fund bold and innovative grassroots programs that carry out essential work toward a healthy environment, promotion of the arts, protection of indigenous cultures, assisting others less fortunate, building strong communities, and educating children and adults everywhere.
